Matera (city), capital city of Matera Province in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. Matera is located 55 km (34 mi) southwest of Bari. The city is a market and industrial center. Numerous stone, cavelike dwellings have been carved into the mountainside above the town; many of them are now being replaced by modern housing projects. The chief buildings are the castle, a 13th-century cathedral, and a museum. Population (1997 estimate) 56,418.
